Quality Care PDF Print E-mail

Radiation therapy or radiotherapy, the use of ionizing radiation to destroy cancer cells is recommended for nearly 6 out of every 10 patients diagnosed with cancer.

At the Radiation Oncology Centre of Jamaica (ROCJ) we offer quality care for radiation treatment, whether curative or palliative care, which may last from one to eight weeks. Our medical professionals are highly trained both locally and overseas in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom and also have many years of experience in this modality of cancer treatment.  At ROCJ our modern equipment, is on par with that found in developed countries and equally important is our patient friendly environment.

A complete course of radiation treatment involves:

  • An initial consultation with one of our radiation oncologists,
  • Simulation and Computerised Planning for the effective delivery of the prescribed radiation doses- this stage may also include the fabrication of treatment devices to be used during treatment.
  • Followed by the selected mode of treatment whether external beam radiation, brachytherapy (seed implants) for the treatment of prostate cancer or superficial radiation for the treatment of skin conditions.
  • Monitoring of patients during treatment also includes x-rays and consultations with staff.

Our patients, who are undergoing external radiation treatment, have daily interactions with our nurse, weekly consultations with their radiation oncologist and two consultations with our nutritionist. They also enjoy the warm hospitality and caring concern of the ROCJ staff.

Competitive Costs

Our costs are more competitive than in North America, so patients who are recommended for radiation treatment do not need to travel abroad for this treatment. Jamaican residents who receive their radiation treatment at ROCJ enjoy the support of friends and family and may continue working during their treatment. Overseas nationals who come to ROCJ for radiation therapy enjoy our quality treatment and Caribbean hospitality.

At the end of our patients’ course of treatment, a graduation ceremony is held and while patients are happy to complete their treatment, they are often sad to leave their new friends and caregivers at ROCJ.
